Look at the Mini Cooper, Chrysler PT Cruiser and VW Beetle- or don't, because they're old news, having fallen out of the realm of exciting retro-rods and into that of standard familiarity. Sometimes, cars like this are a bit like diapers: they're quickly outgrown, and it's hard to keep them fresh for long.

California Special package adds many things such as side scoops, unique tape stripes and larger air intake.

Because of the look, you might be forgiven for thinking Ford's Mustang falls into the same category- but it's not a resurrected retro-ride because it never actually left the market. It's old, but certainly not stale- and special editions like the GT California Special help keep things new.

Special upgrades include a great new bumper, hood and side scoops, and special striping. Despite the public's growing familiarity with the new age Stang, the blue and grey GT CS tester turned heads with ease. It's a striking and significant car- and even the inherent visual weakness of many convertibles is lost in the body upgrades.

Sound effects and special effects
If the look doesn't cause every head within a block to turn, the sound will, as Mustang GT comes with two fantastic stereo systems.

The first, called the Shaker 500, was hooked up with a 6-CD changer and satellite radio receiver. It's got enough power to re-align the suspension in your neighbors Kia, and came with a touch-screen navigation system to keep occupants on course and entertained.

The second stereo system is mechanical. It's an award-winning 4.6 litre V8 with 300 horsepower. Using a 3-valve per cylinder setup, it loves to breathe and isn't shy about making itself heard. Row the five-speed manual's gears and push toward redline, and the V8 positively wails as the speed piles on.

It's one of the best sounding American engines out there, and made me happy to have ears- especially with the extra sound entering the cabin with the roof down. Dig in your spurs and acceleration is strong though not excessive, as the convertible Mustang is a portly car.

In addition to the ambience created by the V8 engine and punchy stereo, owners can customize their instrument cluster with Ford's MyColor system, allowing the gauges to be backlit in any color imaginable. It's an interesting distraction.

With the top down, you will be able to hear the melodious sound of the 4.6L V8.

Without the traffic it would be a brilliant biking route. The road snakes and dips through the countryside, a narrow two-lane ribbon whose many bends offer a challenging variety of angles, cambers, and speeds. It's Ducati Country, to quote the famous advertising phrase except that today there are far too many trucks, each one droning slowly along at the head of a long line of cars.

But it's still a great ride on the 750 Sport, which dispatches the traffic almost as though it wasn't there. Every time I catch up to a line of vehicles, the slim Ducati zips past, barely needing to use the opposite side of the road as it picks them off one by one. The bike's stability is impressive, its instant reaction to an occasional touch of brake reassuring, and its effortless acceleration hugely satisfying.

The 750 Sport's pace and efficiency on that busy road came as some surprise, because early Ducati V-twins are normally revered more for their speed through fast curves than their ability to cut through traffic. Although this Sport's handling didn't disappoint, it was the motor's flexibility that made even more of a lasting impression.

This bike's V-twin engine is not a desmo, either. Back in 1973, Ducati had yet to introduce desmodromic valve gear for roadsters. But the Sport, whose single overhead cams operate valves closed by conventional coil springs, is an important model in Ducati history. Lean, aggressive, and functional, the 750 was the Bologna factory's first true sporting V-twin.

Essentially the 750 Sport was a racier version of the 750GT, Ducati's first big V-twin, which had been introduced two years earlier by the firm then best known for elegant singles. Engineer Fabio Taglioni's design established the 90-degree air-cooled layout, with dimensions of 80 x 74.4 mm giving a capacity of 748cc. The GT's peak output of 50 BHP was raised to 56 BHP at 8200 RPM for the Sport, by a higher 9:1 compression ratio, plus larger 32 mm Dell'Orto carburetors that were filterless apart from wire mesh over the end of each bellmouth.

The Sport's basic chassis components were also shared with the GT, including the steel frame that was a larger version of the trellis designed for Ducati's 500cc V-twin racers by British specialist Colin Seeley. Marzocchi supplied leading-axle forks and rear shocks; braking was handled by a single 280 mm (11 in) front disc, with a single-leading-shoe drum at the rear.

Where the Sport chassis differed was in its clip-on handlebars, rear-set footpegs and singly seat, plus a half-fairing in some markets. The Sport's other most obvious difference was its yellow tank and side panels, in contrast to the restrained red and black of the GT. This bike just looks right, its bold paintwork complementing the heavily finned motor and slender Conti pipes. There's no starter motor, no indicators, no excess weight.

That's great once you're moving, although the high-compression motor needs a hefty kick before it will roar into life. The bars are low and well forward, but the footpegs are not radically rear-set, giving a rather hunched riding position that leaves knees and elbows in close proximity. The clutch is light; first gear goes in with a gentle, right-footed nudge on the one-up, four-down gearbox. And then the Sport is accelerating away, its midrange torque and light weight doing much to compensate for the lack of outright horsepower.

My first impression of the engine was of how tractable and eager it was. Throttle response was excellent at virtually any speed, a crack of the right wrist prompting the Dell'Ortos' accelerator pumps to deliver a dollop of straight juice that sent the Ducati barreling forward. The gears snicked in easily, and the 750's flexibility meant that on a fairly fast road there was rarely any need to come down more than one ratio for all but the tightest of bends.

Some vibration came drumming through the bars and seat from about 70 mph (113 km/h), giving a reminder that the sparsely padded Sport was too single-minded to be comfortable on long runs. Even so, the 750 cruised with a fairly unstressed and long-legged feel. Revved harder, it would produce useful power to thi 8000 RPM red zone, with a top speed of about 125 mph (200 km/h) - good enough to show a clean pair of Contis to most bike in 1973.

That was especially true when a few bends were added, for it was then that the Ducati's lightness and chassis quality showed their worth. Aided by braided hose, this bike's cast-iron single disc and Lockheed caliper hauled the Sport up efficiently�hard enou that I didn't feel the need for the second disc that was originally optional extra.

And although the Marzocchis at either end didn't provide mu comfort, the suspension and frame coped well with hard corneri With the V-twin's lengthy 1500 mm (59 in) wheelbase and a 19-inch front wheel, the Sport was never going to be particularly agile but it could be made to change direction precisely and even quickly, a firm nudge on the narrow clip-ons. On bumpy roads, the Sport bounced around a bit as the stiff rudely damped units failed to react fast enough. But the Dunlop TT100s gave plenty of grip, Ground Clearance was rous, and it was easy to imagine how a hard-charging Ducati' could have embarrassed riders of more powerful bikes, espite this and the publicity boost from Paul Smart's famous in the Imola 200 race in April 1972, the expensive and impractical Sport was not a huge success for Ducati. Production halted at the end of 1974, after a few specification changes, including new forks and switchgear. A year later the Sport was softened with a dual seat and pillion footrests in a belated attempted to attract a wider audience.

Partly because of its comparative rarity, the 750 Sport is now a desirable model�and why not, indeed? With its classical lines, geous sound, exhilarating performance, and purposeful character the aptly named Sport was the model that heralded a string of V-twins from Ducati.

The Harley-Davidson VRSC (V-twin racing street custom), or V-Rod, is a line of V-twin cruiser motorcycles made by Harley-Davidson from 1999 until 2017. They are often called muscle bikes for their relatively high power output. The V-Rods are the first Harley-Davidson street motorcycles with double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and liquid cooling.

Overview [edit]

The VRSC was introduced in 2001 in a single model called the V-Rod aiming to compete against Japanese and American muscle bikes. The V-Rod's Revolution Engine originated with the liquid cooled, four valve per cylinder, overhead cam, 60-degree V-twin engine Harley-Davidson created for its VR1000 racing bike;[6] Porsche Engineering, with the aid of a few Harley-Davidson engineers, developed the engine.[7] [8] [9] Unlike other Harley-Davidson production motorcycles, the radiator and the hydroformed frame members support the round-topped air cleaner cover. The fuel tank on the V-Rod is located underneath the seat, placing the rider on top of it, rather than the usual frontal placement. The "tank" in this case is actually the cover for the air box and coolant fill port. Loosely based on the VR-1000 Superbike, Harley-Davidson built it as a platform for drag-racing competition machines. All VRSC models are produced at Harley-Davidson's Vehicle and Powertrain Operations facility in Kansas City, Missouri.

Harley-Davidson has collaborated with Porsche before, in the Nova Project of the 1970s, which, like the V-Rod, was a radical departure from Harley-Davidson's traditional lineup. Nova was cancelled in 1981, in favor of the Evolution engine.[10] A derivative of the Revolution called the Revolution X was later used on the entry-level Harley-Davidson Street, first released in 2014.

Public reception [edit]

Car & Driver said Harley-Davidson's branding was "culturally rather than technologically driven; so imagine our surprise at seeing the company's newest ride, the V-Rod, complete with a liquid-cooled DOHC four-valve V-twin developed in partnership with Porsche Engineering." They added, "we think the V-Rod is a serious threat to its own stablemates as well as to cruisers from other manufacturers. It's that good".[11]

Motorcycle Cruiser wrote "The V-Rod was intended to bring in more than the usual suspects, and it did. It became the company's best-selling bike in other countries. In America, V-Rod buyers often came from other brands, attracted by its modern engine, excellent performance and not-the-usual-cruiser style".[5]

VRSCA V-Rod [edit]

Model years: 2002–2006. The original V-Rod had a 1,131 cc (69.0 cu in) Revolution Engine, producing a claimed 115 hp (86 kW) at the crank.[ citation needed ] The V-Rod had 49 mm forks and a 180 mm rear tire, with solid disc wheels. The VRSCAs were all factory equipped with 3.7 US gal (14 l; 3.1 imp gal) fuel tanks. In 2006 the VRSCA was equipped with Brembo brakes. The VRSCA was only offered with forward controls. 2003 models were included in the 100th anniversary edition.

VRSCAW V-Rod [edit]

Model years: 2007–2010. The VRSCAW V-Rod is the successor to the VRSCA. First Produced in 2007, it is essentially a VRSCA with a new frame to accommodate the 240 mm rear tire and five gallon gas tank that came standard. The aluminum bodywork of the VRSCA was used in a few early-production VRSCAW models, but was later dropped. With these changes the VRSCAW is a claimed 37 lb (17 kg) heavier than its predecessor. For the first production year the power-plant remained an unchanged 1,130 cc (69 cu in) Revolution engine. The VRSCAW was only offered with forward controls. The combination of increased weight, and a 240 mm rear tire with no power increase made the 2007 VRSCAW the slowest production VRSC produced

In 2008 the VRSCAW V-Rod's Revolution was increased from 1,131 cc to 1,247 cc (76.1 cu in), producing a claimed 84 lbf⋅ft (114 N⋅m) @ 7,000 rpm, and peak power of 123 hp (92 kW) at the crankshaft,[ citation needed ] a slipper clutch was also added, as was an anti-lock braking system option. For the 2009 model year the VRSCAW replaced the VRSCD, which was dropped from the line, as the "base model" for the VRSC family, and the suggested retail price was reduced.

VRSCB V-Rod [edit]

Model years: 2004–2005. The VRSCB V-Rod had a two-year run. It was mechanically identical to the VRSCA, with cosmetic differences included a black frame, polished aluminum and black powder-coated engine, and a slightly different clamshell, instrument housing and handlebars. The VRSCB was only offered with forward controls.

VRSCD Night Rod [edit]

Model years: 2006–2008. The Night Rod was introduced in 2006 as the "new hot rod-inspired motorcycle" built around the Revolution engine. The Night Rod has mid controls similar to the 2006 Street Rod. These are the only two V-Rod models with mid controls (Rear sets). Straight-shot mufflers helped the Revolution Engine to produce a claimed 120 hp (89 kW) at the crank. The Night Rod had a black frame, black and chrome engine, Brembo brakes, slotted aluminum disk wheels, and a color-matched fairing. In 2008 the VRSCD Night Rod's Revolution was increased from 1,131 to 1,247 cc (69.0 to 76.1 cu in), producing a claimed 85 lbf⋅ft (115 N⋅m) @ 7,000 rpm, and peak power of 125 hp (93 kW) at the crank,[ citation needed ] a slipper clutch was also added, as was an ABS option. For the 2008 model year, the VRSCD was the only remaining VRSC model to still have a 180 mm rear tire or mid-pegs. 2008 was also the final year of production for the VRSCD Night Rod.

VRSCDX Night Rod Special [edit]

Model years: 2007–2017.

The VRSCDX is marketed as the factory made custom version of the standard Night Rod and is also part of Harley-Davidson's "Dark Custom" series. In addition to a 240 mm wide rear tire, most of the chrome components of the VRSCD were replaced with black. The wheels were replaced by black slotted disk wheels, with dark orange pin striping. The Straight shot dual exhaust produced a claimed 120 hp (89 kW) at the crank.[ citation needed ] A 5-gallon tank was standard. The DX also include racing stripes. In 2008 the VRSCDX Night Rod Special's Revolution was increased from 1,131 to 1,247 cc (69.0 to 76.1 cu in), producing claimed torque of 85 lbf⋅ft (115 N⋅m) @ 7,000 rpm, and peak power of 125 hp (93 kW) at the crank,[ citation needed ] a slipper-clutch was also added, as was an ABS option. For the 2012 model year, Harley-Davidson launched a tenth anniversary version of the Night Rod Special. This model had a straight-shot exhaust with dual, chrome slash-cut mufflers and chrome exhaust shield; split five-spoke cast aluminum wheels with diamond cut highlights; pullback handlebar with polished finish; inverted front forks in silver and polished finishes; stylized, chrome speed screen visor; graphics, including V-Rod 10th anniversary emblem; and chrome powertrain with platinum crankcase and heads.

VRSCF V-Rod Muscle [edit]

Model years: 2009–2017. The V-Rod Muscle was introduced in the summer of 2008 at the Harley-Davidson dealer show in Las Vegas for the 2009 production model year. In promoting the Muscle, American fashion model Marisa Miller was hired for an advertising campaign aimed at younger, urban riders.[12] It would be one of only three VRSC models for 2009. Like the other two models, the Muscle used the 1,247 cc (76.1 cu in) Revolution Engine, a 240 mm wide rear tire, 5 US gal (19 l; 4.2 imp gal) fuel tank, slipper clutch and forward controls. Unlike the other models in the VRSC lineup, the Muscle had straight shot dual exhausts, with a crossover, one on each side of the bike, unlike the 2>1>2 exhaust found on all other VRSC models. Additionally, the Muscle used an air-box with mock-up air-rams like those found on many American pony and muscle cars. In the production version of the bike the air-rams are cosmetic. The VRSCF also had a chopped rear fender with integrated turn signals, and a side-mounted license plate. Turn signals were integrated into the rear view mirrors for the first time as a stock feature on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The VRSCF provided at the crank a claimed 86 lbf⋅ft (117 N⋅m) of torque at 6,500 rpm,[ citation needed ] which was slightly more torque than the other VRSC models, at a slightly lower engine speeds.

Claimed peak crank horsepower was slightly lower than the Night Rod Special, at 122 hp (91 kW) at 500 rpm lower engine speed.[ citation needed ]

VRSCSE Screamin' Eagle CVO V-Rod [edit]

Model years: 2005. In 2005 Harley-Davidson's Custom Vehicle Operations produced their first V-Rod. The dimensions were identical to the VRSCA at the time, but the VRSCSE had extra chrome, custom paint, and not the typical "clamshell" found on other VRSC models. The VRSCSE had a 1,247 cc Revolution Engine, with CNC ported heads.

VRSCSE2 Screamin' Eagle CVO V-Rod [edit]

Model years: 2006. The VRSCSE2 was the first V-Rod or VRSC model with a 240 mm rear tire. It also used the Screamin' Eagle 1,247 cc Revolution Engine.

VRSCR Street Rod [edit]

Model years: 2006–2007. The Street Rod was marketed as the "roadster-inspired" member of the VRSC line. The Street Rod was the first VRSC to use inverted forks (made by Showa Corporation) with a steep rake and also was the first to use Brembo brakes.[5] It had the highest seat height at 30 in (760 mm) of any VRSC model, and claimed the greatest lean angle at 40°, over the 32° lean of the other VRSC models. The Street Rod came equipped solely with mid-mounted controls. The Street Rod was the first with a 5-gallon tank in the 2006 year model, that would become standard for the line in 2007.Of the various versions of the V-Rod, the VRSCR Street Rod roadster was aimed primarily at the European market[3] and was best able to handle the engine's 120 bhp output. MCN wrote: "The Harley-Davidson Street Rod has sharper steering, four-piston brakes made for Harley-Davidson by Brembo, new upswept exhausts for extra ground clearance, and a revised riding position makes this a Harley-Davidson like no other – one that attacks corners with glee".

VRSCX V-Rod [edit]

Model years: 2007. Harley-Davidson put out the VRSCX as a Screamin' Eagle Tribute bike during the Harley-Davidson V-Rod's second consecutive NHRA Championship. The VRSCX had the same dimensions as the 2007 VRSCAW, featuring the 240 mm rear tire, 5 gallon gas tank, and forward controls. However, the VRSCX also had paintwork similar to the pro stock V-Rod, a smoked drag-visor windshield, as well as the 1,247 cc Screamin' Eagle Revolution Engine. 1400 were built.

VRXSE V-Rod "Destroyer" [edit]

In 2006 Harley-Davidson introduced a non-street legal eight-second drag bike nicknamed "the Destroyer". Its Revolution engine had a longer-stroke crankshaft and increased bore, high compression forged pistons, larger valves, larger throttle bodies, dyno tuned velocity stacks, and high lift cams. Race-only drivetrain changes included a lightened flywheel, multi-stage lock-up clutch, pneumatic shifter, and programmable shift light. A total of 646 vehicles were produced with 625 released to dealer showrooms. The Destroyer inspired the four-time world champion NHRA Pro Stock motorcycle Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod. The Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod ran 6.815 seconds and went nearly 200 mph in the quarter-mile.[4]

The Revolution engine [edit]

The Revolution engine is based on the VR-1000 Superbike race program, developed by Harley-Davidson's Powertrain Engineering team. It is a liquid-cooled, dual-overhead-cam, internally counterbalanced 60 degree V-twin engine with a displacement of 1,131 cc (69.0 cu in), producing 115 horsepower (86 kW) at 8,250 rpm at the crank, with a redline of 9,000 rpm.[13] [14] It was introduced for the new V-Rod line in 2001 for the 2002 model year, starting with the single VRSCA (V-Twin Racing Street Custom) model.[15]

A 1,247 cc Screamin' Eagle version of the Revolution engine was made available for 2005, and was present thereafter in a single production model from 2005 to 2007. In 2008, the 1,247 cc Revolution Engine became standard for the entire VRSC line. Harley-Davidson claims 123 horsepower (92 kW)[ citation needed ] at the crankshaft for the 2008 VRSCAW model. The VRXSE Destroyer is equipped with a stroker[ clarification needed ] (75 mm crank) Screamin' Eagle 1,300 cc (79 cu in) Revolution Engine, producing over 165 horsepower (123 kW).[ citation needed ]

The V-Rod engine was used in the Campagna V13R, and Campagna T-Rex from around 2008 to 2013.[16] There is an agreement to sell the engines to the company for use in the motorized trike. Then in 2013 the company changed the engine in the T-Rex to BMW's K1600 but still uses the V-Rod engine in the V13R.[16]

Чтобы вилка не стучала

Как устранить люфт стержня передней вилки в верхнем мостике  На некоторых мотоциклах ЯВА после 30 — 50 тысяч километров пробега износ приводит к люфту стержня передней вилки в верхнем мостике. Он обнаруживает себя неприятными стуками при движении по плохой дороге. Применение фольги для уменьшения зазора малоэффективно, а затяжка гайки ничего не дает. Устранить люфт удалось при помощи специальной гайки и конусного кольца (рис. 1). Они изготовлены из инструментальной стали (можно, например, использовать 40Х) с закалкой до твердости 45 — 50 HRC. Новые детали ставим вместо круглой гайки, как показано на рис. 2. При затягивании верхней гайки разрезное кольцо разжимается и плотно фиксирует стержень вилки в верхнем мостике. Переделка электрооборудования Явы   В нашем журнале не раз шла речь о недостатках электропитания мотоцикла ЯВА-634, выпускавшегося до 1985 года. При малых оборотах коленчатого вала (до 1800 в минуту) 6-вольтовый генератор не вырабатывает энергию, и все потребители в это время питаются от аккумулятора. Если включено освещение и фара, батарея быстро разряжается, что при многократных циклах приводит к выходу ее из строя. Единственная мера, позволяющая избежать этой неприятности, — поддерживать средние обороты даже на плохой дороге или остановках у перекрестков. Ясно, что это доставляет большие неудобства, особенно жителям сельской местности. Как чехословацкие машиностроители учитывают предложения владельцев мотоциклов Ява из СССР

Цель одна - качество  В конце 1984 года в наши магазины начали поступать мотоциклы ЯВА-350 модели «638-5-00» (см. «За рулем», 1986, № 3), отличающейся предшественницы — «634.00» в основном двигателем и электрооборудованием (12 вместо 6 В), а также передней вилкой. Владельцы новых машин положительно оценили усовершенствования. В +о же время они высказывали пожелания, касавшиеся изготовления некоторых узлов, особенно деталей двигателя. Чехословацкие специалисты — технологи, конструкторы, проанализировав письма потребителей из СССР, осуществили комплекс мер, которые учитывают их предложения. Эта работа была завершена осенью прошлого года. А недавно в ЧССР побывал научный редактор журнала инженер Б. СИНЕЛЬНИ КОВ, который знакомился с производством мотоциклов на чехословацких заводах. Защитные прокладки на шпильки   После длительной эксплуатации мотоцикла ЯВА, особенно в сельской местности, бывает трудно снять цилиндры: пыль и песок, смешиваясь с маслом, плотно забивают отверстия под шпильки. К тому же при разборке часть этой грязи попадает в картер, как ни стараешься его закрыть.   Прокладка под головку   Я избавился от этой неприятности следующим образом. Из сырой резины толщиной около 2 мм вырезал шесть прокладок (согласно рисунку) и надел их на шпильки до установки головки. Моторы новых ИЖей Отвечая на многочисленные письма читателей, интересующихся более подробными сведениями о новых ижевских мотоциклах «Юпитер-З» и «Планета-3» («За рулем», 1970, N 4), работники Ижевского завода Л.
